Al J. Mooney, M.D. is recognized internationally as an author and physician leader. He practices addiction and family medicine in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was board certified in his specialty of Family Medicine in 1979, and has provided medical care in the specialties of family, behavioral, community, and addiction medicine for over 45 years.
Co-author of the bestselling The Recovery Book, he has gained international recognition as a respected authority on addiction and recovery. He has been recognized by his peers through listings in the current and past editions of the book, Best Doctors in America.
Dr. Mooney pioneered the field of addiction medicine. He is an inaugural Diplomat in the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and he helped to establish the original certification standards for the specialty in the United States while serving on the board of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He maintains an adjunct faculty position with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill as Associate Professor.
In addition to recent initiatives promoting global awareness of addiction prevention and recovery, he is actively involved as a leader in campus recovery, drug courts, medical education, peer support, and teaching professionals the essentials of solving the problems stemming from alcohol and drugs.
Dr. Mooney was appointed to the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board by Governor McCrory in 2014. A recent book, When Two Loves Collide, by Emmy Award nominated producer, screenwriter, and author, Bill Borchert, chronicled Dr. Mooney’s childhood and family experiences of parental addiction and recovery. He disseminates his recovery methodology online and face to face through his most recent publication, My Life in Recovery.
