Biography

Allan has over 30 years of experience in the alcohol and drug field, having worked as a community prevention volunteer, a Certified Prevention Specialist in a Community Mental Health Center, taught courses on alcohol and drug related health issues at Eastern Kentucky University, and is now a research analyst and trainer with Prevention Research Institute. He reviews published research on marijuana and other drugs, and the neurobiology of behavioral outcomes of alcohol and drug misuse. He serves on the Revision Team of the Prime for Life motivational intervention program and on the Development Team of the Prime Solutions treatment program. He also participated as a writer and developer of the U.S. Army’s Strong Choices universal prevention program. Allan is the lead author of the “Preventing Alcohol and Drug Problems in Adults” chapter in The Encyclopedia of Primary Prevention and Health Promotion, 2nd Edition.
Allan has served on the faculty of the annual Kentucky School of Alcohol and Other Drug Studies (KSAODS) from 1994 to 2015 and is a member of NAADAC’s invitation-only Speaker’s Bureau. He has presented at numerous other state and national conferences including NAADAC, the West Coast Symposium on Addictive Disorders (WCSAD) and the Cape Cod Symposium on Addictive Disorders (CCSAD). He holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kentucky and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers with a specialty in alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. He is
also a member of the Research Society on Alcoholism, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the newly formed Research Society on Marijuana. Allan presents nationally to other professionals whose work requires interaction with alcohol and/or drug-using individuals, including those in community mental health centers, prevention and treatment programs, juvenile justice systems, impaired driving programs, and Drug Court programs.
