Description: The impact of sustaining a violence related traumatic injury creates insurmountable challenges in the healing process for victims. They tend to have a higher propensity to be violently reinjured, and are often left in vulnerable situations mentally, emotionally, socially, financially and physically. The hospital is a key setting that victims of violence commonly share as they seek medical treatment. This presentation will provide attendees with an overview of comprehensive trauma informed mental health and substance use interventions to address measures of community violence within hospital settings. Attendees will gain insight surrounding the etiology and prevalence of community violence, associated risk factors, ways counselors imbedded in hospital settings can respond using comprehensive, culturally relevant, trauma-informed approaches, and how to create a roadmap to recovery utilizing the social determinants of health and community resources.
