Biography

Dr. Gay has over 20 years of experience providing trauma and culturally informed clinical and supportive services for individuals with various disabilities & impairments, substance use and mental health disorders. Currently, she serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery Trauma at Wake Forest University School of Medicine conducting research, providing clinical supervision, mentoring, and instruction to upcoming clinicians, medical, and health care providers as it relates to working with individuals with trauma related injuries, substance use, mental health and behavioral addictions and other co-occurring impairments. Dr. Gay also serves as the Program Director and Principal Investigator of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist newly developed Hospital Based Violence Intervention Program that provides counseling, therapeutic support and intensive case management services for individuals traumatically injured as a result of firearm and other forms of interpersonal violence. Dr. Gay also owns and operates a private practice, Essential Path Counseling and Consultants PLLC.

Dr. Gay is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, known as EMDR and credentialed as a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS), Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Supervisor (LCMHCS), Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), CertiĀ­fied Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP) and a Violence Prevention Professional (VPP).
