Presenter: Roxanne Thomas, LCAS, LCSW-A
Description: Bodies Left Behind is a powerful and emotionally compelling presentation developed by Roxann Thomas, MSW, MDiv, LCSW-A, LCAS, that explores the often-overlooked experiences of children who enter the foster care system as a result of parental substance use and addiction. This presentation examines the deep psychological, emotional, and developmental effects of parental addiction, including attachment disruptions, trauma responses, grief, and identity struggles faced by these children. Drawing from clinical experience, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based research, the session provides insight into how professionals can recognize the “bodies left behind” — the children whose lives are shaped by loss, instability, and the absence of parental recovery. Participants will learn effective therapeutic strategies, foster care engagement techniques, and systemic approaches to support healing and resilience in children and families impacted by addiction.
