MINI-A. Supervision in the Trenches: Supporting SUD Treatment Staff, Clients, and Yourself Without Burning Out

Presenter: Gayle Bease, LCMHC, LCAS, CCS

Description: Clinical supervisors know what it’s like to be pulled in a million directions — managing a caseload, supervising staff, handling admin tasks, and putting out fires, often within underfunded, understaffed, crisis-driven systems. This role complexity, while vital, is a recipe for burnout when left unsupported. This workshop is for those in the trenches doing the real work. We’ll explore how to maintain the heart and integrity of clinical supervision when you’re short on time, running on fumes, and guiding staff working with high-risk populations.

Through a trauma-informed lens and grounded in research, we’ll examine how burnout is shaped by systems, not just individuals, while offering practical tools to care for yourself, support your supervisees, and foster ethical, sustainable practice. Participants will leave with strategies to create reflective supervision spaces, show up with presence, and help their teams navigate the emotional toll of the work without losing sight of their own wellbeing.

MINI-B. Ethics for Addictions Professionals: Professional Wills and Ethical Responsibilities to Clients

Presenter: Jessica Holton, MSW, LCSW, LCAS

Description: As a provider, have you considered continuity of services if you are suddenly incapacitated? Most ethical standards for human service professionals speak to the importance of continuance of care. Composing proactive provisions for physical or mental incapacitation and/or death may not be on the list of priorities for many providers. During this training, participants will create a Professional Will and consider appropriate updates to their Supervision Contract and Disclosure Statement

MINI-C. Addiction Tx Essentials for Justice Involved Persons:

This presentation explores a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to delivering early intervention and treatment services for persons with gambling disorders, as well as those at risk of developing these disorders. Attendees will learn to recognize the unique characteristics of gambling disorders, discover practical screening tools for rapid assessment, and understand critical considerations for effective treatment and referral processes. MINI-F. HIV & Addiction: What SUD Counselors Need to Know and Why

Presenter: Ed Johnson, LPC, LAC, LACS, MAC, CS, CPSS

Description: HIV & AIDS are no longer the threat they were 35 years ago, but there still is no cure.  Patients with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) are still at greater risk for HIV infection, less likely to be on PrEP and more likely to be nonadherent with their HIV Treatment.  This training will review current treatment and prophylactic protocols. Issues of encouraging patients to know their HIV status and working with special at-risk populations will be explored as well as current HIV Prevention strategies.

MINI-J. Understanding Addiction and Developmental Disability

Presenter: Todd Posey, LCMHCS, LCAS, CCS

Description: According to SAMHSA, people with cognitive and physical disabilities have higher rates of substance use disorders yet have lower rates of treatment than people without disabilities. This is compounded by the fact that many clinicians don’t feel they have the knowledge, training, and skills to provide effective treatment services to this population. With the assistance of grant funding provided by the NC DMH/DD/SUS, Monarch developed an evidence informed curriculum to assist clinicians in providing addiction treatment to people with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD).
